Waterproof Micro Switch vs Standard Micro Switch: Why IP Rating Matters

Оглавление

Waterproof Micro Switch vs Standard Micro Switch IP Rating Explained

There are many products that contain micro switches. Typically these are operated by mechanical means such as a button, lever or indeed a mechanical linkage from another part. The function of a micro switch is to make and break a circuit. The make and break action is typically of a very fast ‘snap action’ type. When moisture or dust is present however the performance of a standard micro switch can differ greatly from that of a water proof version. Knowing why an IP rating is important will enable the designer or even the purchasing department to select the correct model of switch for their particular application.

What Is a Standard Micro Switch?

Standard micro switches, sometimes called basic or ordinary micro switches, deliver reliable snap-action switching in controlled indoor settings. They feature compact designs, quick response times, and options like SPDT circuits with various levers and terminals.

KW12 switches are designed for rated loads of 0.1 to 10A / 125/250VAC and have an operating force of about 170gf. The mechanical lifespan is one million operating cycles. The initial contact resistance is less than 50mΩ. The KW12 series is available with solder termination, quick-connect termination or PCB-termination. The lever length can be short, medium or long.

These switches are used in many household appliances and are controlled for disinfection cabinets, meat grinders, gas stoves, drying racks for electric clothing, water heaters, tire inflaters, ice machines, extractors for juices and electric kettles. They are installed in dry environments, thus do not need any additional protection. Their simple design keeps the costs low. Many of them are approved according to UL, TUV, CQC and CE.

However, even relatively simple switches have limitations that are quickly revealed when put under pressure. The main problem is that, without a seal, dust and moisture will be able to reach the contacts. The result is corrosion, increased resistance or even complete failure. As an economical solution for indoor dry use, however, a standard switch is usually perfectly all right.

What Makes a Waterproof Micro Switch Different?

In addition to normal operation of micro switches, waterproof micro switches are equipped with additional seals to withstand dust and water. Our WS1 series for example is equipped with molded leads, with a silicone sleeve around the contacts and an epoxy resin coating. The WS1 series achieves an IP67 degree of protection, i.e. it is completely dust tight and can be submerged in water on occasion for up to 1 meter.

The WS1 waterproof micro switch carries 5-10A at 125/250VAC. Operating force typically stays under 350gf. Electrical life reaches 10,000 to 50,000 cycles depending on load, while mechanical life hits one million operations. Temperature range covers -25°C to 125°C in many cases. Circuit options include SPDT, SPST-NO, and SPST-NC.

Sealing occurs at key areas of the switch, i.e. button, lever and terminals. After wiring the assembly is completely sealed and does not allow any ingresses. Due to this design standard switches fail very fast.

Key Differences Between Waterproof and Standard Micro Switches

The fundamental difference between patents and patent applications is the level of protection and the intended use. The following table gives you an overview.

Аспект Standard Micro Switch (e.g. KW12) Waterproof Micro Switch (e.g. WS1 IP67)
Уровень защиты Basic (typically IP40 or lower) Dust-tight + water immersion (IP67)
Среда Dry indoor Outdoor, humid, dusty, or wet
Durability in Moisture Limited; risk of corrosion High; maintains performance
Электрическая жизнь 10,000–50,000 cycles Similar or better in harsh conditions
Расходы Lower initial price Higher upfront, lower long-term
Типичные приложения Home appliances, office equipment Automotive, outdoor tools, cleaning gear

Standard and waterproof versions differ mainly in respect to structure. Standard versions are based on simple plastic housing, while waterproof versions are equipped with rubber seals, with epoxy potting, and even with special terminal moldings. This makes them somewhat heavier and larger. However, they are capable of long service life even in exposed applications.

Force, contact and construction can be similar. Sealed construction avoids contact contamination. In high vibration or temperature swing applications the waterproof design is more stable.

Why IP Rating Matters for Micro Switches

What Does IP67 Mean

IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, measures a switch’s ability to block solids and liquids. The first digit rates dust protection (0-6), the second rates water (0-9). For micro switches, IP65, IP67, and IP68 appear most often.

The quality waterproof micro switches are generally provided with an IP67 rating which means that the switch is dust tight and can be immersed in water. Even very small amounts of moisture can cause severe damage to the switch contacts such as shorts, arcing or oxidation. In practice a non-sealed switch will fail after the first or second washing in water, while a sealed IP67 switch will continue to operate after repeated washing in water.

In car door locks rain, car washes and salt from winter roads create a harsh environment. While a standard switch could fail in a few months an IP67 switch can withstand years of use in such an environment. Lawn mowers are also exposed to grass clippings and rain while high-pressure car wash guns can also benefit from an IP67 switch.

When powders or fibers are present in the form of dust in an industrial environment, combined with occasional splashes, the IP67 rating prevents any accumulation within the switch which could increase the required actuation force or cause sticking. The switch manufacturer performs verification tests on the switch rating using a special test dust chamber as well as water immersion tests, in order to guarantee the declared ratings to customers.

As mentioned previously, the degree of protection to be selected must be suitable for the actual risk encountered. Occasional splashes could be adequately covered by IP65, however, complete immersion or persistent high pressure washing would require IP67 or higher class of protection. Failure to select the correct degree of protection can lead to costly warranty claims and loss of production.

Advantages of Waterproof Micro Switches in Practice

We stock a wide variety of Waterproof Switches for all applications. These switches are highly reliable for use in extreme environments, some examples are the brake locks on electric scooters which can be locked and left in the wet. Charging guns for electric vehicles are often left outside in the rain, and shared bike locks are used in all weather.

Sealed products such as lawn mowers and garden equipment avoid wet grass and morning dew, while automatic car washes avoid water and harsh chemicals completely. They greatly reduce the need for maintenance visits and extend the life of your product. Many customers report fewer failures and better performance with sealed products over the seasons.

The reliability of switching also increases safety as failure of critical systems are now prevented due to automatic shutdown. Medical or security equipment used outdoors will also now have an additional degree of safety and while the initial cost of a contact may be higher than alternative parts, the overall cost of ownership is decreased as less frequent replacement are required.

Choosing the Right Micro Switch for Your Application

Start by matching the switch to the environment. For Indoor dry applications with stable temperatures, a simple standard model like тот серия KW12 offers excellent value and proven performance in millions of units around the world.

To be weather, wash-down, or high humidity resistant make waterproof. Our WS1 range is suitable for applications such as automotive locks, outdoor controls and cleaning equipment. Please check operating force, lever type and connection type to suit your mechanical design. Always check relevant certifications for your target market.

The budget, including the cost of downtime and replacement labor, is a factor to consider but for high-volume consumer dry applications a standard switch is usually best. For industrial or outdoor applications where the cost of failure is greater, a waterproof switch will pay for itself quickly.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What does IP67 mean for a micro switch?

The rating of IP67 means a switch is 100% dustproof and can be submerged in water temporarily. In most cases this level of protection is sufficient for outdoor and wet area applications.

Are waterproof micro switches more expensive than standard micro switches?

Yes they are. Waterproof micro switches have additional parts and manufacturing processes to seal the switch. While they cost more initially, they save you money in the long run because they last longer in harsh applications.

Can a normal micro switch be used outdoors?

Yes it can, in protected areas. But when used in the open and subject to rain or dust, the life of the micro switch can be seriously cut short. Special waterproof type switches are suitable for use in the outdoors or in damp locations.

How do I know which IP rating I need?

First, work out the worst case for your product in terms of exposure to water. Will it occasionally get splashed, regularly get exposed to rain, or possibly get washed down with strong detergents? IP65 is often suitable for applications that experience periodic washing with water from sprays etc., while IP67 is more suitable for use in circumstances where the product may be submerged in water.
